Biography

Dr. Yael Sela (DPhil Oxford 2010) is an historian and an Associated Researcher at the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish Studies, the University of Potsdam. From 2014 to 2022, Dr. Sela served as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Literature and Arts, the Open University of Israel. She has held postdoctoral fellowships and visiting professorships, among others at the University of Michigan’s Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies (2020–2021), the Oxford Seminar in Advanced Jewish Studies (2020), the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania (2013–2014; 2015), and Max Planck Institute for Human Development (2011-2013). Her research in German Jewish intellectual and cultural history focuses on intersections of philosophy, political theology, translation, and aesthetics. Her second research area is in cultural history of music, politics, and gender in early modern England and Germany. Her work has appeared in journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Sela’s monograph, The People of the Song: Biblical Poetry, Translation, and the Reception of Moses Mendelssohn in the Berlin Haskalah is forthcoming with Brill (2023).
