The Szloma Albam Library serves the frequent visits by students and faculty each working day, providing textbook and reference collections on open access, as well as course materials and a vast range of virtual material available online. The holdings support the courses and curriculum topics offered and serve as a foundation for students’ study and research on campus.

It is named after the late Berlin Jew Szloma Albam in appreciation of the generous funding the Library receives from the Szloma Albam Foundation (link to https://www.szloma-albam-stiftung.de/). A victim of war and denied formal educational opportunities himself, he decreed that his fortune should be bequeathed to support and facilitate learning for young people in higher education.

The Library currently holds about 10,000 volumes covering the subjects of Touro Berlin’s study programs. It also includes a special collection, the Henry Marx Collection, to support the MA program Holocaust Studies / Tolerance Studies.

In addition to its physical collections, the Library provides access to the Virtual Library of Touro University consisting of a vast collection of databases and digital guidance. Touro Berlin has access to more than 400,000 ebooks and 91 databases providing journals, dissertations, videos, business information, scholarly research, and more.

The Library’s reading rooms offer 20 study places, including 10 networked PCs. A public copier/printer/scanner in the main library can be used for a small fee.

Borrowing privileges are granted only to students, lecturers, and staff of Touro University.

All students and faculty are encouraged to ask the librarian any questions they may have concerning library holdings, catalog and internet research, and the use of the Virtual Library.

Touro University Berlin, a Campus of Touro University New York, USA, is honoured to own the Henry Marx Collection, a special collection within the Szloma Albam Library. The private library of Henry Marx comprising nearly 1,300 volumes was donated by his widow Carin Drechsler-Marx to the Lander Institute for Communication about the Holocaust and Tolerance in 2006.

The journalist Henry Marx (November 3, 1911 – June 22, 1994) was born in Brussels. He lived from 1926 to 1937 in Berlin where he completed his secondary education and continued as a law student at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (now Humboldt University). 

When Hitler seized power in 1933, Henry Marx was barred from writing his final exam which would have completed his studies in law. On June 22, 1934, Henry Marx was denounced. The state police Gestapo arrested him and subsequently imprisoned him in the concentration camps of Oranienburg and Lichtenburg. 

After his release he managed to immigrate to the United States where he became a member of the editorial staff of the New Yorker Staats-Zeitung und Herold, a newspaper established in 1834. At the same time, he studied literature, history and politics at Washington Square College, a part of New York University. 

Henry Marx was a prominent figure in New York’s German cultural circles and fostered a particular interest in the history of German theatre in exile. For more than 16 years he worked for the Goethe Institute in New York, advancing German-American understanding. During the last decade of his life, Henry Marx worked as editor in chief for the German-Jewish newspaper Aufbau, the third one in its six-decade history. 

The Henry Marx Collection has been duly extended over time and currently consists of about 4,500 volumes covering subjects on American and German Jewry, history, persecution, resistance, exile, anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust. It serves the needs of the Master’s program in Holocaust Communication and Tolerance at the Lander Institute.

Admission

• The Szloma Albam Library of Touro University Berlin is both a reference and a lending library. Items (books, DVDs, journals) are available for borrowing, with some exceptions. Special rules apply to items in high-use categories such as course books: they may be checked out for one week, or other loan periods as determined by the librarian, provided all fees have been paid in full.
• Borrowing membership of the library and use of its services are open only to registered students, faculty, and staff. 
• Items may be renewed unless they have been requested by other users. To renew an item, either show it in person at the library, send an email to the library, or call, on the due date at the latest. 
• If an item is checked out by another user, you may request to reserve it. Reservations cannot be placed on items already on loan to the requesting borrower.
• A fine of € 1,50 per day will be charged on any item kept overdue. All fines must be paid before items can be renewed, or further items be borrowed. Fines will be charged at rates determined by the librarian.
• Users who repeatedly fail to return items or clear outstanding fines will be reported to the bursar. The library reserves the right to suspend borrowing privileges for users who accumulate overdue charges in excess of €20, or have repeatedly failed to return overdue items.

Behavior in the library

• All users must behave in a considerate manner. They agree to follow the orders of the librarian.
• All personal belongings should be deposited in lockers on the ground floor. The library will not take any responsibility for any losses.
• Smoking, eating, or drinking is not permitted. 
• Disruptive cell phone use is prohibited: Cell phones should be switched off or set to silent mode in the library.  Talking on the phone or letting it ring or beep is prohibited. Texting is permitted but only in silent mode.  

Duty of care and damage

• Library materials on loan to one person must not be transferred to another. The person in whose name the loan is made is solely responsible for the safekeeping and due return. 
• All items must be treated with care. Report damages or lost items immediately. The charge for a lost item is its cost plus any overdue charges accrued to the date the item is declared lost. Items not returned within a semester of the due date will be declared lost, with the borrower responsible for the cost of their replacement. 
• For willful damages the user must pay reimbursement. The amount depends on the extent of the damage.

• Monday – Thursday from 9:00 to 13:00 (lunch break) and 13:30 to 17:00, Friday from 9:00 to 13:00.
